Overview
In traditional Chinese medicine, music not only nourishes life but also heals illness. As stated in the ancient Yellow Emperor’s Inner Classic, “Heaven has five tones; man has five viscera. Heaven has six pitches; man has six bowels. This reflects how man embodies the patterns of heaven and earth.”
The gong tone tunes the spleen, the spleen akin to earth; the shang tone tunes the lungs, the lungs akin to metal; the jue tone tunes the liver, the liver akin to wood; the zhi tone tunes the heart, the heart akin to fire; the yu tone tunes the kidneys, the kidneys akin to water. Attuning to the five tones corresponding to each organ helps smooth the flow of qi and blood to the body’s five viscera, bringing balance to yin and yang to prevent illness.
Healing Harmonies features renowned Chinese music artists Chan Pik-sum and Yanki Ma, who will perform melodies on the huqin and yangqin. This cross-disciplinary artistic experience integrates traditional Chinese music and medicine, immersing listeners in beautiful melodies that regulate the five viscera and unblock meridians, opening body and mind through the healing power of cultural art.
